The 2022 Château Duhart-Milon embodies the quiet strength and elegance of Pauillac, representing the only Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification owned by the Rothschild family. With its origins dating back to the 18th century, the estate takes its name from Sir Duhart, a retired privateer who settled in Pauillac, and from the mill (“Milon”) that once stood among the vineyards. Since coming under the stewardship of Château Lafite Rothschild in 1962, Duhart-Milon has risen to prominence as one of the Médoc’s finest values, combining the nobility of Lafite’s terroir with its own distinctive character.
The 2022 vintage is crafted from 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, harvested from the estate’s 76 hectares of gravel and clay-limestone soils neighbouring those of Lafite. Vinification was conducted with precision parcel by parcel, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, a portion new, ensuring both structure and refinement. The warm, dry vintage yielded small berries of great concentration, producing a wine of intensity and freshness in perfect balance.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby-purple colour and an elegant bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum, lifted by floral notes of violet and dried rose. Subtle layers of cedar, graphite, tobacco, and warm spice intertwine with secondary and tertiary hints of forest floor, leather, and crushed stone. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins, polished texture, and a long, mineral-driven finish that resonates with Pauillac precision.
Critics have praised the 2022 Château Duhart-Milon for its vibrancy and depth, describing it as both accessible in youth and capable of graceful ageing for two to three decades. It is a wine that captures the essence of classic Pauillac, refined yet approachable, and a superb addition to any cellar.
