The 2021 Cheval des Andes is a striking expression of South American terroir, born from the collaboration between two icons: Château Cheval Blanc of Saint-Émilion and Terrazas de los Andes of Mendoza. Established in 1999, this visionary alliance set out to create a “Grand Cru of the Andes,” uniting French savoir-faire with Argentina’s high-altitude vineyards. Rooted in old ungrafted Malbec vines dating back to 1929, the estate has become a benchmark for elegance and precision in the New World, combining Bordeaux structure with the vibrancy of the Andes.

The 2021 vintage reflects a cooler growing season in Mendoza, yielding a wine of remarkable freshness and aromatic finesse. The blend is composed of 59% Malbec, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot, sourced from vineyards perched between 1,050 and 1,200 meters above sea level. Vinified with gentle extraction and aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, it captures both the power of altitude fruit and the grace of meticulous craftsmanship.

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby colour and an expressive bouquet of black cherries, ripe plums, and blueberries, elevated by violet and dried rose. Secondary and tertiary notes of cedar, graphite, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone weave through the profile, adding layers of intrigue. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish that speaks to its Andean origins.

Critics have hailed the 2021 Cheval des Andes as one of the most refined releases to date, praising its balance of energy and depth, and highlighting its ageing potential of two decades or more. A wine of poise and cosmopolitan elegance, it bridges continents and traditions, offering collectors a truly unique expression of the alliance between Bordeaux and Mendoza.
