The 2018 Podere Giodo Brunello di Montalcino is a captivating expression from Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most acclaimed winemakers, who founded his boutique estate in the rolling hills of Montalcino in 2002. The name “Giodo” is a tribute to his parents, Giovanna and Donatello, and reflects Ferrini’s deeply personal vision of winemaking. With just six hectares under vine, Podere Giodo embodies artisanal precision, crafting wines of elegance, purity, and unmistakable Tuscan soul.
The 2018 vintage is crafted entirely from Sangiovese, harvested by hand from south-facing vineyards rooted in marl and limestone soils. Vinification was carried out in small tanks with gentle extraction, followed by ageing in large oak casks for three years, and further refinement in bottle before release. This meticulous process highlights both the transparency of the terroir and the finesse of Ferrini’s style.
In the glass, the wine presents a radiant garnet colour and an aromatic bouquet of wild cherry, redcurrant, and dried rose, framed by subtle herbal tones. Secondary and tertiary notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, forest floor, and warm spice weave through the profile, lending complexity and depth. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with bright fruit, supple tannins, and a long, graceful finish carried by vibrant acidity and mineral precision.
Critics have praised the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from Podere Giodo for its refinement and harmony, noting its balance of approachability in youth with the potential to age beautifully over the next two decades. A wine of authenticity and artistry, it represents both the intimate scale of Podere Giodo and the grandeur of Brunello at its best.
