The 2018 Opus One is a harmonious and elegant expression from Napa Valley’s most iconic Franco-American partnership, founded in 1978 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Conceived as a “first growth of California,” Opus One combines the finesse of Bordeaux with the power and generosity of Napa fruit, and has since become one of the world’s most coveted wines.
The 2018 vintage reflects an exceptional growing season, marked by a mild spring and an even summer, yielding fruit of purity and balance. The blend is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, vinified parcel by parcel and aged for 19 months in new French oak. This precision winemaking allows each varietal to contribute to a seamless whole of extraordinary depth and refinement.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby-purple colour and an expressive bouquet of cassis, blackberry, and black cherry, lifted by violet and rose petal. Secondary and tertiary layers unfold with graphite, cedar, cocoa, tobacco leaf, espresso, and a touch of baking spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, layered finish that lingers with mineral elegance.
Critics have hailed the 2018 Opus One as one of the finest vintages of the decade, praising its precision, freshness, and immense ageing potential. While already captivating after decanting, it will continue to evolve gracefully for 30 years or more, embodying the timeless vision of its founders and the grandeur of Napa Valley at its very best.
