The 2017 Château Latour Les Forts de Latour is a rare and collectible second wine from one of Bordeaux’s legendary First Growth estates. Château Latour’s heritage dates back to the Hundred Years’ War, when a fortified tower guarded the Gironde estuary, inspiring the name and emblem. Recognised as Premier Cru Classé since 1855, the estate is renowned for its precision viticulture, parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled vats, and meticulous oak ageing. Les Forts de Latour, first released in 1966, is crafted with the same attention to detail as the Grand Vin, sourced from a mosaic of terroirs including the famed Enclos, historic Pauillac parcels, and select newer vineyard acquisitions.
The 2017 vintage presents a deep garnet-purple hue and a refined blend of 65.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, and 0.8% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, it offers layered aromas of warm cassis, blackberry pie, dried roses, plum preserves, and mulberries, intertwined with pencil shavings, cedar, and subtle tobacco. Hints of Indian spices, forest floor, and damp earth add depth and intrigue. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with waves of ripe black and red berries, fine-grained tannins, and a fresh, peppery lift. Structured yet elegant, it shows remarkable purity and a long, satisfying finish.
Critics have praised this wine highly, with 94 points from both Wine Advocate and Vinous, and 93 points from Jeb Dunnuck, who notes its potential to age gracefully until mid-century. Perfect for collectors and connoisseurs, the 2017 Les Forts de Latour is a wine of pedigree and poise, equally suited for enjoying now after decanting or cellaring for decades to come.
